Health Insurance

If you are working in a position budgeted for 20 hours per week or more, coverage is generally effective on the first of the month following your date of hire or your transfer into a benefits-eligible position.

Employee contributions for all of the health insurance options below are deducted weekly on a pre-tax basis (i.e., before federal, state or social security taxes are withheld).

Other Health Insurance Options
UMass Memorial offers two additional types of medical coverage: An HMO coordinates your care through a primary care physician and a PPO allows you to choose any medical provider.

Prescription Drug Coverage

If you are enrolled in a medical plan through UMass Memorial, you will automatically be enrolled in the prescription drug plan. You may fill your prescriptions through the UMass Memorial Prescription Center Pharmacy or through a retail pharmacy. Prescription coverage consists of a three tier structure. Our Prescription Center Pharmacy is able to offer additional savings on prescriptions for employees and family members who are covered by an insurance plan offered through UMass Memorial.

UMass Memorial Patient and Employee Prescription Center Pharmacy

The UMass Memorial Prescription Center Pharmacy offers you the convenience of filling prescriptions on our University or Hahnemann Campuses, or delivery service to Memorial Campus or Guaranty Bank building. You are eligible after electing health care coverage through UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Please note that any restrictions in prescriptions that can be filled by the UMass Memorial Prescription Center Pharmacy are due to federal public health legislation and/or tax regulations.

Pension Plan

To help you build your retirement savings, UMass Memorial offers the UMass Memorial Health Care Pension Plan. The pension plan provides you with a retirement benefit based on your pay and years of service with UMass Memorial. UMass Memorial Health Care assumes the investment risk of the plan, so your benefit is secure, predictable and guaranteed to be there when you need it.

401(k) Retirement Plan

UMass Memorial provides you with the opportunity to participate in the 401(k) Plan to assist you in building a secure financial future. The plan provides a convenient, tax-effective way to save for your long-term financial needs by contributing a portion of your pay through pre-tax payroll deductions (subject to IRS limits). UMass Memorial provides an employer match on eligible contributions.

403(b) Retirement Plan

UMass Memorial provides you the opportunity to participate in the 403(b) Plan to assist in building a secure financial future. The plan provides a convenient, tax-effective way to save for your long-term financial needs by contributing a portion of your pay through pre-tax payroll deductions (subject to IRS limits).

Flexible Spending Accounts

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA's) are a tax-effective way for you to pay out-of-pocket health care and dependent care expenses for you and your family members. Your contributions are deducted from your pay before taxes are calculated and withheld, lowering your taxable income. There are three separate FSA's offered through UMass Memorial (health, dependent and orthodontic). Each one provides the same tax-saving opportunity.

Life Insurance

Life insurance is available for you, your spouse and/or dependents through UMass Memorial. We provide a group term life insurance equal to one times your annual base salary up to a maximum of $50,000. Supplemental life insurance is available for purchase on a voluntary basis for employees. You may also have the option of purchasing spousal and dependent life insurance coverage.

Short-term Disability Insurance

UMass Memorial offers a group Short-term Disability (STD) Plan which pays a percentage of your weekly pay for up to six months (180 days) if you are unable to work due to illness or injury. We offer a plan that will supplement up to 70 percent of your pre-disability base weekly earnings with a maximum of $750 per week.

Long-term Disability Insurance

Long-term Disability plans are available to help employees who are out of work for six months or longer by providing a percentage of their base pay. UMass Memorial provides a Long-term Disability Base Plan with a benefit equal to 55 percent of your monthly base salary, up to $3,000 per month, at no cost to you. You may purchase supplemental long-term disability coverage, which increases your wage protection to 66.6 percent of your monthly wages, up to $10,000 per month.

Paid Time Off and Holidays

We offer a generous time off benefit. The amount of time off is based on your position, your status as a union or nonunion member and the number of hours per week you are scheduled to work.

Tuition Assistance

After three months in a benefits-eligible position, you may apply for reimbursement for tuition costs up to $2,000 per academic year if you work 30 or more hours per week and $1,000 if you work between 20 and 29 hours per week. Reimbursement amounts are subject to your respective union’s collective bargaining agreement.

Child Care

UMass Memorial offers a Child Care Program managed by Bright Horizons. You may enroll your child, ages six weeks to six years, in one of our two child care centers.
